Two levels of resistance are defined:
High Resistance (HR):
Varieties limit the growth and development of the specific pest or disease under normal pest or disease pressure, when compared to sensitive varieties. However, these varieties may show some disease symptoms or damage under heavy pest or disease pressure.
Intermediate Resistance (IR):
Varieties limit the growth and development of the specific pest or disease, but may show a greater number of symptoms compared to highly resistant varieties. Varieties with intermediate resistance will still show fewer disease symptoms or damage than sensitive varieties when grown under similar environmental conditions and/or pest or disease pressure. The ISF Horticultural Section recommends that its members use the terms immunity, high/standard or moderate/intermediate resistance and sensitivity in relation to biotic stress, avoiding the term tolerance in communications with customers.

Tolerance:

It is the ability of a variety to withstand abiotic stress without serious consequences for growth, appearance and yield. Horticultural companies will continue to use the term abiotic stress tolerance. When the resistance code refers to more than one pest biotype or pathogen strain, it does not mean that the resistance is effective for other biotypes of the same pest or other strains of the same pathogen.
