The Obelix tomato variety from CapGen Seeds is gaining momentum and making its way among the best oval or roma tomatoes in the country. Se trata de una variedad de tomate con un gran tamaño, haciendo alusión a su nombre. Además, está siendo apodado entre los agricultores almerienses como “El gordo de Almería”.

Obelix continues with good trajectory

Obelix is only one year old as a commercial variety and has been very successful due to its productive plant and excellent fruit. We expect Obelix to break all sales records in the coming months, due to the momentum that the variety has gained in only one year of trajectory.

During the first quarter of this year, the company has already surpassed last year’s sales in total, which reinforces the bet that the grower is making on this variety for the domestic market.

According to Rafael Cremades, commercial director of Capital Genetic, “If sales of Obelix tomato continue to increase at this rate, it is very possible that there will be a shortage of seeds by the end of the season”. He also states that they are already working on obtaining more seeds to supply the high demand produced.

For those who are not yet familiar with the Obelix tomato, it is a highly productive variety, a strong plant with an open growth habit and a balanced vegetative growth. The bunches are extremely uniform, with 6 to 8 tomatoes per bunch, which means that the fruits have considerable dimensions and remain uniform throughout the cycle.

The fruit of Obelix usually ranges from 180 grams to 200 grams on average, although there are also from 160 to 220 grams. They are characterized mainly by a bright red color, brightness and firmness without equal, as well as their excellent flavor.

The plant has a high resistance (HR) to Fol: 0-1 / Va / Vd / Vd / ToMV and an intermediate resistance (IR) to TYLCV.

All these characteristics are the ones that are being sought in cooperatives such as the Union or Agroponiente, and is that more and more are joining the recommendation of the new and surprising Obelix tomato.

From CapGen Seeds we invite you to attend our next open days of Obelix tomato, as you can see how it behaves first hand and ask any questions or information about the variety.
